Fortnite Is Unveiling a Batman-Themed Event Tomorrow

Alfred, I need more Slurp Juice!

Move aside, Marvel—Epic Games is about to debut a Fortnite crossover with DC's Batman in celebration of the character's 80th anniversary. All will be revealed on the morning of September 21, but leaks from the past week suggest it'll introduce some familiar Batman weapons and cosmetics to the game and transform part of the battle royale map into a recreation of Gotham city.

Epic tweeted out a tease for the "Fortnite X Batman" reveal, set for a YouTube livestream at 8am ET on Saturday, September 21 (that's Batman Day 2019, though the date moves around yearly). Epic will give out some kind of free in-game reward to livestream viewers who've linked their Fortnite and YouTube accounts.

After the 10.31 patch hit Fortnite earlier this week, intrepid dataminers discovered a handful of Batman in-game items and other material that have already ended up in the game's files. While no Batman-themed skins have been leaked (wouldn't the Joker and Mr. Freeze fit right in on the Fortnite battlefield?), it looks like the crossover event will introduce Batarangs, Batman's cape, a Batwing glider, and a grappling hook gun.

An unreleased loading screen depicts players gliding down from the Battle Bus into Gotham city. Perhaps this is a unique arena for a limited-time mode, but parts of the battle royale map have been temporarily transformed for Fortnite's crossovers with properties like Borderlands and John Wick in the past.

For both Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame earlier this year, Fortnite put limited-time modes and items in the game, but has only added a couple Marvel-themed skins and associated cosmetics for keeps. We'll see what kind of lasting impression DC and the Dark Knight will leave on the game shortly.

This isn't the only way Epic Games is getting in on Batman's 80th—until September 26, the Lego Batman and Rocksteady's Arkham trilogies are free on PC through the Epic Games Store. If you're a comic book fan you should probably see if your local store's doing any Batman Day giveaways too.
