Fortnite Removes Overpowered Infinity Blade From Game: "We Messed Up"

The Mythic weapon goes into the vault.

Epic Games announced that it is putting the Infinity Blade Fortnite weapon on timeout by vaulting it after players complained that the weapon is poorly balanced and overpowered.

"We messed up and rolled out the Infinity Blade overpowered/without good counters, especially in the end game," Fortnite announced in an official tweet. "The Infinity Blade has been Vaulted and we are re-evaluating our approach to Mythic items."

The Infinity Blade was added in Fortnite with the 7.01 update and was the first instance of a "Mythic" tier weapon. Only one Infinity Blade would spawn on each map due to its rarity, but once in-action the reception to the weapon was largely negative.

Epic announced an update to the Infinity Blade in update v7.10 by removing the ability to build and harvest while wielding the Blade as a counter-balance to the weapon's power. "When designing the Infinity Blade the goal was to provide a weapon with inherent risk to balance out the great capability it provides – the ability to harvest/build removes a great deal of that risk."

However, it seems that Fortnite will table the weapon altogether and rethink how Mythic items are introduced into Fortnite. Part of the benefits of running a live game like Fortnite is that Epic can respond to bubbling problems immediately like the case with the Infinity Blade. No word on yet when we might see another Mythic tier weapon in Fortnite.
