Fortnite Season 8 Brings With a Simplified Version of the Apex Legends Ping System

That looks familiar, actually.

Fortnite Season 8 is upon us and alongside new skins and changes to the map, Epic's delivered some gameplay updates as well. Including a familiar looking ping feature we could've sworn we've seen in Apex Legends.

Apex Legends really did change the game when it popularized an intuitive and well-thought out ping system. It not only highlighted waypoints, but enemies, weapons, and other useful information as well. It's a system we'd like to see in more games and Epic Games apparently agrees. The new season of Fortnite introduces an updated World Marker system that makes it closer to Apex's ping system.

According to the Fortnite Patch notes for v8.00, the World Marker improvements can now be double-clicked to place a "danger" warning marker. It can also place World Markers on weapons and items, the latter of which will also display the item's icon and rarity. 2D UI indicators for your markers will also help make them visible through objects.

All of which is to say that it looks like Epic saw some use for an updated World Marker system, perhaps after the successful implementation of a similar ping system in Respawn's Apex Legend. But who's to say?

Even then, this is a welcome surprise. Apex Legends' ping system highlighted a useful tool that would be welcome in any online multiplayer game. Not only does it help get information onto the map for better strategy, but Apex Legends' ping system helps disabilities and anxiety. More online competitive games could stand to use a similar ping system and we're glad Fortnite's adopted some World Marker updates.

Apex Legends' system still highlights other information like whether or not enemies were nearby recently, or if one member of the team plans on splitting-up for a bit to loot a specific location. But those are more co-op-focused features necessary for Apex Legends' mandatory team play.

Fortnite Season 8 replaces the cold winters of Season 7 with a hot new volcano and some new threats. There are pirates, ninjas, and a new battle pass to boot. Check out our Fortnite Season 8 guide for more info.
