Fox Opens New Division For Video Game Licensing and VR Development

FoxNext will make VR gaming experiences for your favorite films and television shows.

Fox has announced the formation of FoxNext, a new division that will handle video gaming, virtual reality, augmented reality, and location-based entertainment for Twentieth Century Fox Film and Fox Networks Group. FoxNext started in the Fox Innovation Lab, which launched the The Martian VR Experience last year.

It came out for PlayStation VR and Steam VR. It wasn't great!

The new division will combine the teams involved in licensing efforts that resulted in The Simpsons: Tapped Out and Alien: Isolation, with the groups working on VR experiences for upcoming films like War for the Planet of the Apes and Alien: Covenant. FoxNext will also coordinate the development of theme-park attractions, like the 20th Century Fox World theme park in Malaysia.

FoxNext will be led by new president Salil Mehta. Mehta was previously the president of content management for Twentieth Century Fox Film. He will report directly to Twentieth Century Fox Film CEO Stacey Snider and Fox Networks Group CEO Peter Rice

"Extending our storytelling to new platforms in new ways is a constant focus for us as we look to build more touch points with consumers every day. Building on the momentum we've already seen in this area via the Fox Innovation Lab, FoxNext represents a natural next step in defining our long-term vision in this arena and Salil is quite simply the perfect executive to build this group into what we know will be an industry leader," said Snider in breezy Hollywood style, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

M.H. Williams is new to the journalism game, but he's been a gamer since the NES first graced American shores. Third-person action-adventure games are his personal poison: Uncharted, Infamous, and Assassin's Creed just to name a few. If you see him around a convention, he's not hard to spot: Black guy, glasses, and a tie.
