Game Workers Unite UK has become the first video game industry union in the country. The announcement was officially made last week.
Game Workers Unite UK is the UK affiliate of the Game Workers Unite organization and is currently the first and only union the represent workers in the video game industry. The union's goals include ending the practice of excessive/unpaid overtime, improve diversity, support abused or harassed workers, and secure a living wage.

The grassroots movement known as Game Workers Unite exploded earlier this year at GDC during the heated conversation regarding unionization in the games industry. We had a chance to speak with International Game Developers Association director Jen Maclean at GDC where there seemed to be some resistance to mass unionization in the games industry. MacLean later said she supported unionization.
Support has poured over the news that Game Workers Unite UK has become a recognized union. There wee several reports from this year that brought attention to the working conditions of game developers including stories about 100-hour work weeks at Rockstar Games, a dominant sexist culture at Riot Games, and the mass layoffs at Telltale Games.
