The fifth Gears of War, Gears 5, was confirmed to be coming to Xbox One and PC on September 10, 2019 at this year's Xbox E3 showcase. Alongside a campaign, multiplayer, and horde mode, developer The Coalition showed a new multiplayer mode called Escape alongside the release date.
It started off with a creepy montage of Gears 4 star Kait Diaz seemingly struggling with Locust influence in her mind, set to the tune of Billie Eilish's "bury a friend." It set the tone for what seems to be a much darker, emotional entry in the Gears series.
The Coalition confirmed Gears 5 is launching on September 10, but Xbox Game Pass holders can play it four days early via the service. There will also be a multiplayer tech test on July 17, as well as a preview of horde mode at this year's Gamescom.
There was also a short teaser for the Escape mode, a new game type where you escape from the inside of a Locust nest. They also teased the ability to build your own nest, creating your own challenges to pose to other players.
Anyone who preorders or plays in the first week will get the Terminator Dark Fate character pack as well, adding cosmetics featuring the robo-skeleton Termiantor to Gears of War. Odd, seeing as Terminators should be siding with the forces against humanity rather than for, but hey, why not?
