Granblue Fantasy: Versus Finally Gets North America Release Date

Granblue Fantasy: Versus Finally Gets North America Release Date

The gacha-inspired fighting game comes stateside in March.

The next fighting game from Arc System Works might be launching next week in Japan, but North American players won't have to wait too long to check it out. Granblue Fantasy: Versus comes to PlayStation 4 on March 3, 2020, just a month after the Japanese launch date.

Based on the extremely popular Granblue Fantasy mobile game, Versus is one of several games based on the series coming over to the U.S. A one-on-one fighting game developed by Arc System Works, notable for the Guilty Gear series and Dragon Ball FighterZ, the game features a roster made up of various gacha characters, now duking it out in the ring.

We got a chance to get some hands-on time with the game, both during its online beta and during our PAX West event last year, and it seems like one worth keeping an eye on. It feels like an anime-styled take on Street Fighter, where you aren't tossed into massive combos when you miss a block. It's also very beginner-friendly, in that it has a "special" button that lets you do moves that would otherwise require more inputs with a simplified button press.

That may upset the purists in the room, but opening the game up to more players seems like an easy way for Granblue Fantasy: Versus to stand out. It also has the benefit of a gacha game with lots and lots of stylish anime characters to draw from; there's already one confirmed set of fighters on the way, and more to come after.

Finally, it has an RPG-styled single-player mode that's been reminding me of Soulcalibur's extensive story modes. I've never played the mobile game it's based on, but chances are I'll give this one a shot.
