During an eighth anniversary livestream for Guild Wars 2, developer ArenaNet revealed that the game is coming to a new platform. Players will be able to enjoy the base game and both expansions, Heart of Thorns and Path of Fire, on Steam for the first time. Sadly, there is a drawback, as players won't be able convert their existing Guild Wars 2 account to the new Steam accounts, or vice versa. This is a move to expand the audience more than anything.
The developer also showed off the next step of Guild Wars 2. The next major expansion will be End of Dragons. The Elder Dragons have always been a huge part of the lore in Guild Wars 2, so that title points to a massive paradigm shift in the world. End of Dragons will take players to the isle of Cantha, which was once lost to the rest of Tyria only to reappear 200 years later. The design of Cantha and the dragon in the trailer look to be inspired by Asian culture and mythology, which is new for Guild Wars 2.
"Guild Wars 2 has endured for the better part of a decade because of its innovative gameplay, rich storytelling, and passionate fanbase," said NCSoft West COO Chauncey Gammage. "As the game's incredible fantasy world prepares to grow once again with the End of Dragons expansion, we are excited to bring this universally acclaimed gaming experience to Steam users around the globe."
End of Dragons is planned for a 2021 release, and with the Steam release, players will be able to pick it up from Steam or ArenaNet directly. To celebrate the announcement, players who own the current expansion Path of Fire will be able to unlock a brand-new mount, the Skimmer. For the first time ever, players will be able to explore the underwater locations of Tyria, probably tying into the upcoming expansion. If you log into the game today, you'll be mailed a Collection quest that'll unlock the Skimmer.
ArenaNet is also making Guild Wars 2: Path of Fire, which includes all previous content, 50% off until September 4.
