Harry Potter: Wizards Unite Launches Later This Week, Pokemon Go Fest-Style Event Possibly This Summer

We have a release date for Niantic's Harry Potter AR game.

Niantic's next location-based AR game, Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, finally has a release date. The mobile Harry Potter game will be coming to applicable devices on June 21.

Niantic has been holding beta tests for Harry Potter: Wizards Unite in specific regions like New Zealand and Australia, but the AR game now has a North American release date. June 21 is only a couple days away, so this almost qualifies as a surprise launch.

Like Niantic's other hit AR mobile game, Pokemon Go, Harry Potter: Wizards Unite is a mobile game where players traverse into the real world to complete virtual objectives on their phone. Like Pokemon Go, Wizards Unite players must capture magical items that have sprung loose into the Muggle world and battle mystical creatures.

Niantic CEO John Hanke revealed the release date as well as a potential Pokemon Go Fest-style event for Wizards Unite later this summer. Pokemon Go Fests are live events where players gather in a real location and complete limited time, special events. A similar event for Wizards Unite means that players will go to a specific location and potentially earn limited-edition rewards.

We were able to preview Harry Potter: Wizards Unite a few months ago and came away intrigued by Niantic's take on the popular fictional universe. Wizards Unite is currently planned for launch on both iOS and Android devices.
