When Hitman 3 launches next year, it'll complete the World of Assassination trilogy that began in 2016 with Hitman: Season 1. Hitman 3 will be a platform for all of the levels, costumes, and weapons players have become familiar with over the past four years. New campaign levels like Dubai will join previous locales like Sapienza and Mumbai.
Today, IO Interactive revealed that one mode won't be carrying over to Hitman 3. Ghost Mode, the 1v1 multiplayer mode added in Hitman 2, won't be returning for the next game. The studio is moving away from the mode completely, with Ghost Mode servers shutting down for Hitman 2 on August 31, 2020. The Phantom Suit, which can currently only be unlocked by playing Ghost Mode, will be added to Hitman 3 as an unlock.
"With our focus currently on other areas of the World of Assassination, Ghost Mode won’t be featured in Hitman 3 and we have made the difficult decision to shut down the Ghost Mode servers for Hitman 2," said the studio. "We have learnt a hell of a lot from Ghost Mode over the last two years and we’ll be taking all of those learnings onboard for what we do in the future with regards to multiplayer. We want to send a sincere thank you to all of our players who have enjoyed Ghost Mode over the last two years."
While Ghost Mode is going away, everything else is coming back. Elusive Targets, Escalations, Contracts Mode, and Sniper Assassin missions will all be carried forward into Hitman 3. When it's released, Hitman 3 will be a single platform for all modern Hitman content, a cornucopia of disguises and death in unique locations worldwide.
Hitman 3 will also add virtual reality as an option for the entire trilogy, through PlayStation VR. There's currently no word on whether VR support will come to PC platforms as well. Hitman 3 will be launching on PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5 on January 2021.
