Hogwarts Legacy, the Long-Rumored Harry Potter Game, Is Coming Next Year

After many leaks and reports, it was finally revealed at today's PS5 event.

In the Harry Potter universe, the wizarding world is kept secret from non-magic users. In our real world, the new Harry Potter game from Warner Bros. and Avalanche Software has been quite a poorly-kept secret. Revealed at last, we know that Hogwarts Legacy is coming in 2021.

Set in the 1800s, Hogwarts Legacy will cast players as a student at the titular "who holds the key to an ancient secret that threatens to tear the wizarding world apart." The reveal trailer shown during today's PS5 event focuses on the story and setting over gameplay specifics, but it does look like Hogwarts Legacy will feature an expansive world beyond the halls of the school. Here's an overview from the official website.

Hogwarts Legacy is an immersive, open-world action RPG set in the world first introduced in the Harry Potter books. Now you can take control of the action and be at the center of your own adventure in the wizarding world. Embark on a journey through familiar and new locations as you explore and discover fantastic beasts, customize your character and craft potions, master spell casting, upgrade talents, and become the wizard you want to be.

Back in October 2018, leaked footage first pointed to the existence of Avalanche's projec. Subsequent reporting indicated that Warner was hoping to reveal the game at E3 2020 before the event was canceled due to the pandemic. With series creator J.K. Rowling also making headlines of late for views seen by many as transphobic, a recent Bloomberg report also quotes a source who says Rowling has "very little direct involvement" with Hogwarts Legacy.

Warner Bros. confirms that Hogwarts Legacy will launch on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
