The Divinity: Original Sin 2 definitive edition is coming PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on August 31. As part of the announcement, Larian Studios and publishing partner Bandai Namco unveiled Sir Lora, the Squirrel Knight and literal squirrel. How did Larian come up with Sir Lora? Well it all happened during what was supposed to be a normal meeting between Larian and Bandai Namco.
"So the real story is we were having a meeting with Bandai," begins Larian Studios' director of publishing Michael Douse. "They said to us, 'We need a pre-order.' So we're like, 'We'll think about it later.'" Almost immediately though the Larian team began coming up with ideas in the meeting room, mid-meeting with Bandai.
"Somebody was like, 'We have the Squirrel Knights. Why don't we do something narrative with the squirrels that are already in the game about the great acorn falling from the sky?' And then somebody said, 'Well, why doesn't he just give you crafting recipes?'"
Remember, Larian is discussing this all while still in a meeting with Bandai who kickstarted the whole thing with an innocuous question. "Then we were just laughing so hard, partially because we were sitting with retail people who were like, 'What is this insane company that are just talking about squirrels?'"
There are plenty of stories about companies coming up with silly ideas for their games and including them simply for the humor, but as Douse recounts, this might be the one of the few reported times the funny idea riff began and continued during a business meeting with an outside company.
The Divinity 2: Original Sin complete edition not only comes with Sir Lora, Squirrel Knight, but will include overhauls of some of the game's story as well as an easy mode. On Xbox One X there is a 4K and HDR update as well.
We chose the first Divinity Original Sin as our number 20 best RPG of all time. You can read our Divinity Original Sin 2 review which praised the game as a near perfect CRPG. We'll have a full interview with Larian up in the near future.
