Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity is a Breath of the Wild Prequel Coming This November
See the Great Calamity up close.
Koei Tecmo and Nintendo are partnering for another Warriors game in the world of Hyrule. Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity is an upcoming action game, set 100 years prior to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
Announced today, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity will tell the story of Calamity Ganon's re-emergence and attack on Hyrule, before the events of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. If you're eager to see them take place, it's not a long wait either: Age of Calamity is set for a Nov. 20, 2020 launch date.
At the beginning of the presentation, The Legend of Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma confirms that it will still be "a bit longer" before any more updates on Breath of the Wild's sequel. However, to expand on the world of Breath of the Wild, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity will focus on the events of the Great Calamity and the war fought by Link, Zelda, and the Champions.
It's a bit of a different focus compared to other Nintendo Warriors games, like Fire Emblem Warriors or the previous Hyrule Warriors. Those games often took a sweeping approach to their respective franchises, gathering together characters from across various games (and even some new ones, like Linkle).
Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity instead seems to focus solely on the world of Breath of the Wild. You can spy some gameplay of the various champions, as well as a parry that uses the Sheikah tablet powers. Yosuke Hayashi, producer of Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, says the collaboration began when Aonuma approached Koei Tecmo about using a Warriors game to tell the story of the Great Calamity.
Hayashi says that "unlike the previous Hyrule Warriors games," Age of Calamity has been developed through working closely with the Zelda team, including the look, world, and dialogue. It certainly looks the part, so I hope this ends up being a cool new way of finally seeing this part of Breath of the Wild's history. Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity hits on Nov. 20, 2020 on Nintendo Switch.
