Gods & Monsters is no more. Long live Immortals Fenyx Rising.
Okay, that's a little dramatic, but it's all to say that the leak from earlier this week turns out to have been true. Minus a separating colon, Immortals Fenyx Rising is indeed the new name that Ubisoft has settled on for the next game by the Assassin's Creed Odyssey team at Ubisoft Quebec.
First revealed as Gods & Monsters back at E3 2019, we'll be getting our first look at the title under its new name at the next Ubisoft Forward presentation. At one point, the project also went by the codename "Orpheus," which was revealed earlier this summer when Google accidentally set an early build of the game public on Stadia.
Immortals Fenyx Rising will likely be the big focus of the upcoming Forward presentation. We'll also be seeing more of Watch Dogs Legion, due out next month, but it seems Ubisoft will save new information on Assassin's Creed Valhalla and Far Cry 6 for a later time.
We've not seen anything official from Immortals Fenyx Rising since the initial Gods & Monsters premiere trailer, so we could be in for quite the surprise if the design goals of the game have changed along with its name. The Stadia leak showed elements similar to Odyssey and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, but at the time, executive producer Marc-Alexis Cote said that a lot had changed since that build was made.
In light of the numerous allegations of abuse and misconduct at Ubisoft and the exits that have followed in the weeks since, seeing Immortals again will also be of interest given what we've learned about Ubisoft Quebec. In July, Bloomberg reported that the studio had also been working on another fantasy project called Avalon with Mike Laidlaw, formerly of BioWare. That project was ended by then-chief creative officer Serge Hascoët, who apparently vetoed other fantasy projects before it. Serious allegations against Hascoët led to his recent resignation.
As the fantasy project that survived at Ubisoft Quebec and a title that's still aimed for the current fiscal year, there's a lot riding on this re-reveal for Immortals Fenyx Rising. We'll get to see how it's coming along next week on September 10.
