Insomniac Reaffirms PS5 Exclusivity for Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart

This ain't no Sackboy… or Miles Morales… or Horizon Forbidden West.

Of all the games Sony has shown off for the PlayStation 5 so far, only one has been an in-your-face showcase for the greatly improved loading times of the new console: Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. That said, some PS5 non-exclusivity surprises had people wondering if the new Ratchet might also make its way to PS4, but Insomniac Games says no to that idea.

Our friends at Eurogamer picked up on a tweet reply from Insomniac's official account made yesterday, where the developer confirms in no uncertain terms that Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is "a PS5 exclusive." Again, even though we've only seen Rift Apart demoed on PS5 and the whole game seemingly revolves around a mechanic that would hardly work on older hardware, it's worth noting the confirmation—only when Sony revealed the prices and release date for the PS5 did it announce that Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Horizon Forbidden West, and Sackboy: A Big Adventure are all slated for cross-gen releases.

As shown in Rift Apart's initial reveal, the new dimensional rifts used in gameplay take advantage of the PS5's solid-state hard drive to do near-instantaneous loading of wholly new areas. A trip through a rift between totally different worlds only takes a couple seconds on PS5, but optimizing that same gameplay to utilize slower hard disk drives (like those standard on PS4s and PS4 pros) would be a huge ask even for a team like Insomniac.

Other key selling points about Rift Apart suggest it's being built as a next-gen title from the ground up. It includes support for the PS5's hardware accelerated ray tracing and can run at 60 FPS (perhaps with a resolution or feature trade-off as with Spider-Man on PS5, though that's currently not confirmed).

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is intended to launch within the PS5's "launch window." We've still not seen that much gameplay (nor any with the new playable Lombax), so we're likely looking at a release within the first half of 2021 at the earliest. On Nov. 12, day-and-date with the new console debut, Insomniac will launch Spider-Man: Miles Morales for PS4 and PS5. A remastered version of 2018's Spider-Man will also be included as an exclusive bonus for the PS5 Ultimate Edition of Miles Morales.
