IO Interactive unveiled what it's been teasing for some time now, and it seems like a perfect match. The developer behind the Hitman series is currently working on a new James Bond game, currently titled Project 007.
Confirmed in a release today, Project 007 is a wholly original Bond story, and exclusively a video game story at that. Partnering with MGM, EON Productions, and Delphi, IO Interactive will be both developing and publishing the new Bond game using IO's Glacier tech, made for "modern systems and platforms."
According to the teaser site, this will be an origin story of sorts. Players will take up the mantle of James Bond as they earn the world-famous agent a 00 status. If I remember correctly, that's going to entail a body count.
This really, honestly, seems like a match made in heaven. IO Interactive is currently ramping up to the third game in its rebooted Hitman trilogy, and it's been teasing that it's had something new in the works for a while. The last few years have been a bit of a journey for IO Interactive, as the studio went independent and started to build up the suite of assassination that is the modern Hitman series.
A Bond game made by the folks who understand blending into the crowd, corporate espionage, and telling small storylines within a larger sandbox? Sign me up. I'd also like to credit our former colleague Mike Williams for being years ahead of the curve calling this one.
We'll know more as IO Interactive lets more news out; no release date or window has been announced yet. For now, we'll just have to wait patiently, knowing the folks behind Hitman are gearing up to deliver a James Bond origin story. 2020 can have some fun surprises after all.
