Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics have their first chance at turning around the post-launch doldrums of Marvel's Avengers with some new content coming up soon. After delaying the launch of the first new character and story DLC for the game in October, we now have a new date and a new trailer for the free arrival of Kate Bishop.
Now set to launch on Dec. 8 across all platforms, the "Taking AIM" expansion starring Bishop will introduce her as a playable character on the Avengers roster, taking a starring role before her mentor and shared super-identity pal Clint "Hawkeye" Barton gets his own DLC story. Barton will be an integral part of Bishop's new storyline though, as today's new trailer makes clear.
Before we find out exactly what's been going on with Barton in the second part of this Hawkeye "double feature," Bishop's story sees her utilizing a questionable time travel gateway to try and track him down. The reformed Avengers—Tony Stark, Kamala Khan, and the rest—seem to be supportive of Bishop's mission, but Hank Pym seems to be a bit of a wet blanket when it comes to the whole "messing with time" thing.
At the very least, while Kate hops timelines on her quest, it seems she'll have to be just as precise about interfering with the past as she is with her arrow shots. The Crystal Dynamics Marvel video game universe is already a pretty messed-up one in terms of the state of the world, and for my money, it's not worth saving Barton if it means permanently quantum leaping into an even more busted reality.
This new DLC will arrive before Marvel's Avengers gets its promised free next-gen upgrade for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S/X. That's been delayed out to 2021.
Crystal Dynamics Studio Head Scot Amos says he's "confident that we'll see PC players (as well as those on Xbox One and PlayStation 4) return to the game" once the developers get the ball rolling on a steady stream of new Avengers content. Certainly, the plan for Marvel's Avengers has been to position it as a long-lasting, constantly updating live service experience, and with plenty of heroes to add, it could become one with time. The first real step on whatever post-launch journey it ends up taking is now just a few weeks away.
