Konami Tries to Keep MGSV Alive with Metal Gear Survive

Metal Gear Survive has Konami stretching Metal Gear Solid V as far as the universe can go without Kojima.

Konami has announced Metal Gear Survive, a brand-new addition to "the Metal Gear Solid V universe". The game is a 4-player co-op stealth title that diverges from the ending of Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes. Something with wormholes, organic monsters roaming the desert, and the soldiers of Mother Base fighting to survive.

Is this a metaphor?

"We are delighted to announce another exciting addition to the Metal Gear franchise," said Konami Digital Entertainment Europe president Tomotada Tashiro. "Metal Gear Survive will offer a fresh take on the series' famed stealth elements but within a unique co-op setting that is designed for a truly engrossing multiplayer experience."

Survive is the first Metal Gear game developed after Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima left Konami. According to IGN, it will use the same Fox Engine that powered Metal Gear Solid V. I expect that Konami Digital has taken the excellent stealth gameplay of MGS V and tried to extrapolate that into something else.

Outside of the title and the odd connection to Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes, the game looks to be a complete multiplayer spinoff, not unlike Capcom's effort to spin off of Resident Evil with Umbrella Corps. Hopefully it turns out better than that title.

Metal Gear Survive is coming to PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One in 2017.
