Left 4 Dead 2 Is Getting a Massive Fan-Made and Valve-Approved Update

The Last Stand Update adds a new campaign and a whole lot more.

Countless first-person co-op survival games have followed in their wake, but there's still a healthy community of players for Valve's Left 4 Dead games out there. In the lead-up to the tenth anniversary of Left 4 Dead 2, some modders set out to make a community update focused on a new campaign. With Valve's blessing, that project—The Last Stand Update—has become a giant content drop featuring dozens of new maps, weapons, achievements, and more. It'll be out on September 24.

If the name of the update sounds familiar, you might remember that The Last Stand was a survival mode map released by Valve for the first Left 4 Dead. At the heart of the new community-built update, The Last Stand has been expanded into an entire full-length campaign for Left 4 Dead 2.

The team responsible for the update is also adding additional maps (four for scavenge mode and a whopping 26 for survival) and some new weapons (a shovel, pitchfork, and some guns from Counter-Strike: Source). Not content to stop there, the update features "hundreds of bug and exploit fixes" along with other new additions, like previously unused voice lines for the survivor characters.

In an interview with Jordan Oloman for NME, Valve's Kerry Davis clarifies that most of the work in the update is indeed straight from the community. "On Valve's side we've been providing code support and working on bug fixes," Davis says, "but everything else is the work of community members that's being integrated into the official game."

Davis and other Valve employees began actively providing support for The Last Stand after the team shipped Half-Life: Alyx earlier this year, which partially explains why the update's coming out close to a year shy of Left 4 Dead 2's ten-year anniversary. Jaymes "JAiZ" Hayward, one of the modders behind the project, says it's been in development for 11 months now.

The Last Stand Update will be made available to all Left 4 Dead 2 owners on PC for free. The full game will only set you back $9.99 on Steam, but it's also been put on sale for $2 several times over the past couple years. You may want to wait around until the update drops just in case it goes on sale again.
