Mana Series' Seiken Densetsu 3 Shown On Nintendo Switch

A cryptic reveal with no details may point to Super Nintendo games on Switch.

News by Mike Williams, .

Today, the official Twitter account for the Seiken Densetsu (Secret of Mana) series in Japan tweeted a short teaser video. The video shows what appears to be two people playing Seiken Densetsu 3 on a Nintendo Switch. Both players are using a single Joy-Con to enjoy the game's multiplayer mode.

The tweet offered up no other information, outside of the hashtag, which simply reads "Seiken Densetsu", the series' title.

The video seems to point to Super Nintendo/Famicom titles coming to Nintendo Switch in some fashion, likely on Virtual Console. Seiken Densetsu 3 has never been released in North America, and the game never came to Virtual Console Wii, 3DS, or Wii U. This would be the first release in Japan on Virtual Console, and hopefully, North America and Europe as well.

Square Enix has yet to announce anything concrete yet.

Interesting... Hope SE can rebuild the game and fix its various bugs and glitches, especially when the original pushed the SFC to the limit.

I've never played the fan-translated ROM, what's with the WIN! that appears on screen? Does it do that after you clear the enemies on screen?

Also, random, I picked up the Secret of Mana Genesis arrange album just last year. Doesn't have all tracks from the OST, but was still well worth it. Flight into the Unknown and Second Truth from the Left never rocked so hard.

I can't imagine this would get an English release, but boy, would I ever love one.

Yeah, I doubt we'll see this in English-speaking countries. It's a great game, though, definitely from a time where SquareSoft was firing on all cylinders.

That would be awesome if they actually release this for the Switch, though!

I remember once, years and years ago, Squenix released some screenshots for some DS game and among them was one single screenshot of Seiken Densetsu 3 in the resolution and the DS' screen. They didn't say anything about it at the time, or ever after. It was weird.

(Legal (and localised)) Seiken Densetsu 3 may be even more of an impetus for some people to get a Switch than MOTHER 3, I tell you what. More Hiroki Kikuta music, more party members, three different paths (I think Adventures(?) of Mana, the first FFA remake, did the same thing, but with two paths), general awesomeness? Count me in!

If it releases on the JP Virtual Console equivalent, that'll be a great start. It didn't get released on Wii/Wii U VC, so it'd be an improvement. I'm not actually expecting it to get translated for NA/EU releases, but if it is, I'll be very much amazed and will throw actual physical money at the device while shouting for it to shut up and take my money.

Just this morning (after seeing the tweet), I had a bit of a talk with some other RPG fans and the text in the game is put behind several compressions. It was a big part of why the fan translation in 1998 was rather difficult. I don't know nearly enough about computers and compression to know whether or not this would still be difficult today, but given Square Enix' track record, any effort is probably too much effort. I wonder if they could get M2 to fix this entire game... maybe a remake...

@Stepout Yea, the win text bar appears after killing all the enemies on the screen. The last enemy killed then has a chance of dropping treasure.

@SIGGYZtar "fix its various bugs and glitches"
Oh, wait, you're serious. Let me laugh even harder.

This game is riddled with bugs. Like, FFVI-level number of bugs. Evasion does nothing, shields don't work as intended, other buffs do weird things (elemental sabers, etc), some character-specific equipment can be equipped by everybody... There's a lot of them.Edited March 2017 by Hoolo

If the game has been rebuilt from the ground up we might see an English version. If it's based on the ROM though that might be a tall order considering the nightmare the fan translation turned out to be.

@SargeSmash Switch eShop is region free. If it's released in Japanese we'll be able to play it, albeit untranslated.

Would love to see a Ted Woolsey style translation anyway.

Yeah it sucks that some of the class specific mechanics don't work properly

Haven't they already explicitly stated they'll have NES and SNES games? Pretty sure they said you get one NES or SNES game a month with a subscription to the online SERVICE, but don't get to keep it.

@Tetragrammaton : Well, translated is the important part, since I can't read Japanese. :(

The fan translation is good enough that I wouldn't mind seeing them use it.Edited March 2017 by SargeSmash
