Many sports are taking to the virtual field in the wake of their regular seasons being put on hold or canceled, with many turning towards simulations. But this weekend's tennis tournament is going to be a little wackier than a usual set.
Celebrities and tennis athletes are teaming up for a charity doubles tournament called the Stay At Home Slam in Mario Tennis Aces, taking place on May 3, 2020. According to the IMG announcement, real-life tennis stars like Serena and Venus Williams, Maria Sharapova, Naomi Osaka, Kei Nishikori, and Kevin Anderson will pair up with the likes of DeAndre Hopkins, Hailey Bieber, Steve Aoki, and Seal.
It will stream on Facebook Gaming on Sunday, and the pairs will compete for a $1 million donation shared between the team's charities of choice. All of this takes place inside Mario Tennis Aces, a fairly fantastical tennis game compared to something like Top Spin or Virtua Tennis.
Then again, I'm even more intrigued because it's Mario Tennis. As fun as it is to watch athletes compete in FIFA or play through a small league tournament in MLB The Show, it's too close to reality. There needs to be some video game-style nonsense involved. Let's trot out all the Mario sports classics; let's get some NASCAR drivers in Mario Kart.
While Aces has a little more in common with fighting games than traditional tennis, I'm looking forward to watching Seal utilize the power of the Zone Shot.
Check out the Stay At Home Slam this coming Sunday, May 3, on Facebook Gaming.
