According to a recent sales report, Mario + Rabbid: Kingdom Battle is the best-selling third-party game on the Nintendo Switch. The numbers come from the physical sales reported by NPD and the UK company Chart-Track GFK.
There's not a whole lot of competition in the third-party Nintendo Switch market, but that doesn't undermine the success of Mario + Rabbids. There's been a noticeable weariness regarding Ubisoft's manic Rabbid mascots, but Kingdom Battle is a pleasantly engaging and creative mix of IPs that took a lot of critics by surprise, myself included. It also helps that Kingdom Battle is one of the best looking and best playing games on the Nintendo Switch.
The popularity of the title coincides conveniently with the announcement that Nintendo will be handling publishing duties for the game in both Japan and South Korea, which is a pretty strong vote of confidence. However, considering how Nintendo pushed Ubisoft to work so hard on the title, it's no surprise to see the fruits of their collective labor pay off in this way.
Our positive review of the game called Mario+Rabbids one of the big surprises of 2017 and writing that it's, "absolutely beautiful, full of color, life, and hints of Mario's long history."
