Mass Effect Legendary Edition Is a Full Trilogy Remaster Coming Next Spring

A new Mass Effect is also in its early stages.

Next year, Commander Shepard will be returning to action. Today, BioWare confirmed that a remaster of the Mass Effect trilogy—spanning Mass Effect 1, 2, and 3—is coming to Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.

In a new BioWare blog as part of today's N7 Day (Nov. 7) rollout, the studio confirmed reports that a Mass Effect remaster is in the works. The Mass Effect Legendary Edition will be a remaster of Commander Shepard's journey through the first three Mass Effect games. Sorry, stalwart Andromeda defenders.

The current launch window for Mass Effect Legendary Edition is spring 2021. Despite arriving next year, BioWare is only launching on the current crop of consoles and PC, not PS5 or Xbox Series X and S. The blog does state that the trilogy collection will be forward compatible, with "targeted enhancements" on Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5.

As for what current-gen and console players can expect, there's all the single-player content and DLC, as well as the various promo packs. The BioWare team has been working on updating "textures, shaders, models, effects, and technical features" of the three games, though the blog specifies that it's not a remake or reimagining. They specify that the goal is to "modernize the experience." Higher resolution and framerate seem like the big goals.

This confirms ongoing reports from over the last year that a trilogy remaster has been in the works. At the end of the blog, BioWare also confirms one more report: that a new Mass Effect is also in development.

Last year, Kotaku reported a new Mass Effect was in development. Today, BioWare confirms that, though there isn't much to be said yet outside one eye-catching still. That certainly looks like a Drell and Salarian hanging out next to that odd-looking ship.

Honestly, the trilogy remaster is still the big news for me. I'm interested to see where a new Mass Effect—either a return to the Milky Way, Andromeda, or a new foray entirely—could go, but I'm really thrilled at the thought of modern players getting to play this trilogy. It had a profound effect on me, and preserving it for the future means even more people get the chance to play it, reliving their favorite moments or discovering them for the first time.

Mass Effect Legendary Edition arrives in spring 2021 for Xbox One, PS4, and PC.
