MechWarrior 5, Now a Timed Epic Exclusive, Gets Bumped Back to December

The big robots will stay with Epic for a year.

You'll have to wait a little longer to hop into those mechs. Piranha Games is pushing the launch of MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries out to December 10, and now it's headed exclusively to the Epic Games Store.

MechWarrior 5 is set to be the first single-player focused game in some time for the series, and Piranha Games seems to want to take its time on it. According to a statement from executive producer Russ Bullock in a press release, this new partnership with Epic is what's giving them the studio the time it needs.

"Understandably some fans will be disappointed that they have to wait a short while longer for MechWarrior 5, but it's important to Piranha Games that we absolutely get this right," Bullock says. "We are happy to say that our new partnership with Epic Games Store allows us the time and ability to accomplish our goals both in the games development and marketing efforts."

The game's FAQ page specifies that MechWarrior 5 will be exclusive to the Epic Games Store for a year, and after a year it will "most likely show up in other digital game stores." Steam keys, however, will not be accepted, and Piranha Games is offering a full refund to those who have one.

Those seeking a refund of their preorder can request one from now until September 1. You'll also keep all the MechWarrior Online content from the various pre-order tiers, though it will preclude you from taking part in the upcoming closed beta for MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries.

Steam hopefuls are likely bummed, though there are a few solid mech games on the platform. Still, it's MechWarrior, and considering this fifth title is a bit of a revival for the series, that can put longtime fans in a dilemma. This just adds MechWarrior to the long list of games caught in the Steam-Epic exclusivity kerfuffle.
