Meltan is the Official Name of Pokemon Go's "Nutto"

"Who's that Pokemon?...It's Meltan!" ("Meltan!")

Over the past few days, Pokémon Go players have reported occasional sightings of a blobby Pokémon whose head is shaped like a nut [pause for laughter]. The weird little fellow has a name: Meltan. But beyond being "an ancient Pokémon" with some connection to Ditto, we don't know very much.

Meltan's name and true nature were unveiled earlier today in a Pokémon Go YouTube short titled "The Two Professors." In it, Professor Willow talks to his mentor, the legendary Professor Oak, about Meltan. The two conclude a lot more field study is necessary before they can pin down exactly what Meltan is, and why it turns into Ditto when it's captured.

Data miners pulled Meltan out of Pokémon Go's code late last week, and its simple but weird design caused players to start speculating. They wondered if Meltan was a placeholder Pokémon, or a glitch like Pokémon Red and Blue's infamous Missingno. Ultimately, most people who set eyes on the strange little dude decided he might be a whole new Pokémon species. They were right.

The new "Two Professors" video is marked "Episode One," so expect to see more footage of Professor Oak and Professor Willow gabbing about Meltan before Professor Willow ends the conversation early by hanging up on Oak mid-sentence.
