A New Metal Slug Is Coming to Mobile in 2020

It's back, but maybe not like you expected.

Metal Slug fans are finally getting a new entry in their beloved series, though after many years, it might not be the return they expected. Metal Slug Code: J is a mobile experience, developed by Timi Studios for Tencent.

The look of this new Metal Slug is a little surprising at first, but honestly, I'm warming up to it. Yes, I am still a major fan of the Metal Slug series' spritework, but this stylized new take on it keeps a lot of the character and animation that made the originals pop too.

Functionally, it still seems to be a Metal Slug game. Scroll to the side, dodge bullets, and use a host of weapons to annihilate the enemy. A new weapon, a freezing gun of some kind, looks like it could be fun. But the catch is that it's for mobile; you can see the prompts and inputs on-screen, which is kind of breaking the experience for me. It's hard to imagine I can appreciate the new look of this Metal Slug when my thumbs are taking up screen real-estate.

Still, it's been ages since Metal Slug 7, so I'm ready to give a new one a try. The series has been dormant since that 2008 game, mostly popping up with spin-offs and re-releases on new platforms. If Streets of Rage 4 can resurface again and absolutely crush it, maybe Metal Slug can too. No release date or further information about Metal Slug Code: J has been shared for the time being.
