Minecraft's Steve and Pals Are the Next Fighter Joining Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Steve's building up the roster.

Today marks another combatant joining the Super Smash Bros. arena, or rather, multiple characters. A Minecraft avatar, either the usual Steve or several other variations, is the next fighter to enter the ring in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Revealed in a brief stream today from Nintendo, Minecraft's Steve will be able to do most of what you expect from a Minecraft character. The trailer shows off various moves like push-blocks, dynamite, a pickax, eating food, crafting, and building. Of course, there is building.

Minecraft Steve is just one variation of the character. Much like the Dragon Quest Hero representing multiple games' protagonists, the Minecraft entrant can be one of several familiar faces. Steve and Alex represent the human variations, while there is also a Zombie and Enderman option. Really, why not play as the tall, slender man from the End(er)?

Today's stream was a surprisingly short one, given Smash Bros. director Masahiro Sakurai's penchant for long breakdowns of a new fighter's history and techniques. Don't worry though, as that breakdown is on the way. "Mr. Sakurai Presents 'Steve and Alex'" will air on Oct. 3 at 7:30 a.m. PT / 10:30 a.m. ET, just ahead of Minecraft Live.

From the sounds of it, putting Minecraft into Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was a bit of a challenge. "What's difficult, however, is the programming work required to bring the character to life," Sakurai says. "It's a massive challenge. Plus, we have to rework all our existing stages so that blocks can be placed in them."

We'll see just how the blocks come together this weekend. No release date has been set yet for the Minecraft characters' Smash Bros. debut.
