Modders Find NES Emulator In Nintendo Switch Firmware

They don't know what it's for yet, but they know it's there.

It seems modders have found some interesting bits and pieces hidden in the Nintendo Switch. These folks are digging into the Switch firmware to figure out how everything works. A recent look into that firmware has found an Nintendo Entertainment System emulator buried deep within.

LuigiBlood, a researcher and modder known for his effort in getting the 64DD working again, was the first to notice and say something about the emulator on Twitter.

On the Switchbrew Wiki, where modders are cataloging the firmware files, the emulator appears at the bottom of the page under System Applications. The NES emulator, code-named "flog", doesn't seem to do anything yet. It's likely that the emulator is a part of the Nintendo Switch Online subscription service. When the subscription service launches next year, it's supposed to offer the Classic Game Collection, which Nintendo previously confirmed will include NES titles.

The interesting part isn't that there is an emulator, it's that the emulator is on the firmware level. With the Virtual Console games, each title was packaged with its own emulator. This is a slightly different way of Nintendo running classic games. No clue if that will yield any improvements when it comes to playing classic games.

M.H. Williams is new to the journalism game, but he's been a gamer since the NES first graced American shores. Third-person action-adventure games are his personal poison: Uncharted, Infamous, and Assassin's Creed just to name a few. If you see him around a convention, he's not hard to spot: Black guy, glasses, and a tie.
