Morbid Fans Think Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Character Deaths Are Tied to Secret New Mode

Morbid Fans Think Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Character Deaths Are Tied to Secret New Mode

And then there were none.

Reports of Luigi's demise have been greatly exaggerated, but it doesn't change the fact that death looms large over Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Three characters have already been "killed" during Nintendo's various Super Smash Bros. Ultimate presentations, and fans are starting to suspect these deaths are teasers for the Ultimate's single-player mode.

On Twitter, user @noctulescent pieced together the blurred mode in the most recent Ultimate Nintendo Direct to reveal a pixelated green mode that could be saying "Spirits." On Reddit, a user named Nintendrew went ahead and made a mock-up of what that could look like, un-blurred.

Many theories online suggest that Spirits could be the name of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's single-player mode in the vein of Super Smash Bros. 3DS's Smash Run and Super Smash Bros. Brawl's Subspace Emissary.

As compiled by Eurogamer, the Reddit theory threads seem to be speculating a single-player mode centering around reuniting spirits of characters to recruit them to your roster. It's a pretty morbid way to beef up the Ultimate roster, but Nintendo isn't one to shy away from gallows humor.

The most recent Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Nintendo Direct announced Simon and King K. Rool for the roster along with Echo Fighters like Dark Samus, Richter, and Chrom. Check out our breakdown of the last Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Direct here.
