More Final Fantasy 16 Details Revealed, Including the World and Its Leads
Everyone's fighting over the Mothercrystals.
Last month, the next Final Fantasy was unveiled as a next-gen game. While it's still a ways off, this morning Square Enix is sharing some new details about the world and characters of Final Fantasy 16, including the names of its protagonists.
A PlayStation blog written by producer Naoki Yoshida out today rounds up the most pertinent details. Final Fantasy 16 takes place in Valisthea, which has mountainous crystals across it called Mothercrystals. Yes, the crystals bestow good fortune upon the people in this realm, and wars have been fought over control of them. However, a Blight is spreading across the land, testing the current tenuous peace between nations.

Clive Rosfield is the main character, a young Knight who protects his younger brother Joshua. The latter is the Dominant of the Phoenix, or a being who has the power of an Eikon—classic Final Fantasy summons, in this case Phoenix—residing within them. Clive protects Josh, though Josh is also able to transform into Phoenix and fight. Joining them is Jill Warrick, a childhood friend who was taken in as a ward of Rosaria.
Other Eikons and Dominants also exist; the trailer from earlier this year showed Phoenix as well as Titan, Shiva, and Ifrit. Different kingdoms treat their Dominants differently—some are royalty, and some are sent off to war. There are some more details and art on the newly launched Final Fantasy 16 site.

It's exciting to have a new Final Fantasy, considering it's been some time since Final Fantasy 15. The road trip RPG was met with some fairly divisive opinions, but Final Fantasy 16 seems like a return to classical Final Fantasy: fewer flying cars, more swords and summons. The political intrigue angle definitely brings up more Final Fantasy 14 vibes.
We'll learn more about Final Fantasy 16 when its next big announcement arrives in 2021, according to today's PS Blog. Final Fantasy 16 has not set a release date, though its currently destined for the PlayStation 5.
