Mortal Kombat 11 Is Headed to Next-Gen Consoles, With Rambo in Tow

Two oft requested returning fighters and John Rambo join the lineup.

The time-bending deathmatch of Mortal Kombat is carrying forward to the next generation of consoles. NetherRealm Studios announced today that Mortal Kombat 11 will be coming to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X | S as part of an Ultimate version, and with some more new fighters packed in too.

Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate is a complete package of all Mortal Kombat 11 content—or kontent—released thus far, arriving Nov. 17, 2020. For $59.99, buyers get the base game, both Kombat Packs, and the Aftermath story expansion. The next-gen version of Mortal Kombat 11 will have visual enhancements and "significantly" reduced load times.

If you already own all of that on last gen, you'll be able to freely upgrade to Ultimate on next-gen consoles; PS5 will support an upgrade path for owners of either the regular or Ultimate version on PS4, and the Xbox side will support Smart Delivery from Xbox One to the new Series X and S.

If that's the case, the only new content to pick up will be Kombat Pack 2, which was also shown today. Three fighters enter the arena of Mortal Kombat with the second pack. Mileena and Rain are familiar faces, the former being a frequently requested addition to the roster, and Sylvester Stallone lends his likeness and voice for the debut of Special Forces commando John Rambo. The Kombat Pack 2 will run for $14.99 when it goes live on Nov. 17, alongside the Ultimate version.

Series co-creator Ed Boon had teased some news was on the way earlier this week, as the latest entry in the Mortal Kombat series passed the eight million sales mark, but this is a pretty good surprise. The addition of some more characters is good—honestly, not sure I could've ever predicted Rambo coming to MK—but a full package of the entire Mortal Kombat 11 experience on next-gen is good. The base of Mortal Kombat 11 was already quite solid, and the additions of Aftermath and new fighters over time have made it one of the better offerings for fighting games in some time.

As for player population on next-gen consoles, NetherRealm has konfirmed that Mortal Kombat 11's krossplay will carry forward into Ultimate. PS5, PS4, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X | S players will be able to fight against each other on opposite platforms, at least in select modes.

If anything, it's nice to know that kombat will kontinue onto next-gen. Mortal Kombat 11 was already gorgeous on current systems, so it'll be fun to see how much better it looks on some new hardware. Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate, and Kombat Pack 2, arrives on Nov. 17, 2020.
