Those still playing multiplayer on the PlayStation 3 take a blow today, as Naughty Dog is shutting down servers for its PS3 games. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception, and The Last of Us multiplayer will be offline after 10 years of operation on September 3, 2019.
For one last hurrah, Naughty Dog is keeping services intact until September 3 and making all multiplayer DLC for the affected games free. You'll be able to download all add-ons through bundles for each game, which will add all gameplay and cosmetic additions for free. So if you're feeling especially nostalgic, now's the time to fire up the PS3.
This is a bittersweet move that always tends to happen in the shift between console generations, and frankly, it's heartening to know those servers have still been up for so long. With Sony looking ahead to a PS4-PS5 relationship that would have backwards compatibility for multiplayer, it's possible we see another long lifespan for games on the PlayStation 4. It certainly would be nice to keep playing Apex Legends or Mortal Kombat 11 with my PlayStation 5-less friends.
But it's hard not to feel rosy about The Last of Us multiplayer. I have a lot of fond memories of watching my roommate play, just to see which of our Facebook friends would show up next. It was a really cool feature, one I hope they bring forward to the next game. Meanwhile, for those still playing on PlayStation 3, we salute you. Enjoy your last few days playing like the generations never moved on.
