Neil Blomkamp's Live-Action Anthem Trailer Is Gorgeous, but Does Nothing to Explain the Game's Plot

I'd just really prefer a guidebook.

After some brief teasers, District 9 director Neil Blomkamp unveiled his collaboration with EA BioWare today in the form of a live-action short film for Anthem. While the short film isn't much longer than the teasers that preceded it, it's still very pretty to look at. You can watch it below.

EA says the scenes in Conviction take place decades before when Anthem begins. I say scenes, because rather than a cohesive short-film, Conviction really is more like a live-action trailer with a bunch of beautiful shots. The story, as far as I can tell, revolves around a group of Freelancers who rescue a mysterious woman with a connection to the Anthem. There're some fights, some betrayals, and a big storm at the end.

I feel bad saying this, but I'm still not a hundred percent sure about some of the core narrative concepts in Anthem. I was hoping Blomkamp's film would shed some more light on that, but as a prequel there wasn't much to glean from it for the upcoming release of Anthem. I did enjoy watching it however, and no doubt we'll see some kind of Chappie crossover in Anthem in the near future.

Anthem is BioWare's upcoming live-service action game. Centered around armor-wearing mercenaries named Freelancers, players can control different Javelin suits and take on missions. All the while uncovering the mystery of something called the "Anthem of Creation."

BioWare is stepping away from its single-player RPG bread-and-butter for an online, co-op experience with Anthem. We've spoken with BioWare on how it intends to balance story with action, and tried out the end game content for ourselves already.

Anthem comes out on February 22 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Origin Access Premier members can play the full game a week early starting tomorrow, February 15, on PC. Check out our Anthem guide for more info including previews, news, trailers, and more.
