There's a New The World Ends With You Game Arriving Next Year
This is not a drill; I repeat, this is not a drill.
The World Ends With You has not, in fact, ended quite yet. Today, Square Enix has announced a new game set in the same universe titled Neo: The World Ends With You, coming next year.
The new entry looks to be fully 3D, though still taking place around Shibuya and within the afterlife, as part of the Reapers' Game according to Square Enix (via Gematsu). It's not clear when this takes place in relation to The World Ends With You, though it features some returning faces, including the math-obsessed Minamimoto and the mysterious girl from the Switch version, Final Remix.
There's a fair amount to pick apart in this trailer. For one, the dual-screen dynamic from the original Nintendo DS seems to have disappeared. Even instead of pairs, it looks like there are now "teams" in the Reapers' Game; you can see a few characters fighting alongside each other. Action takes place on a 3D field, which opens up some new movement possibilities, as well as room for much, much larger bosses.
Still, there look to be pins, a team HP bar, and the distinct style that's made The World Ends With You an enduring classic through all these years. I'm really interested to see where Square Enix goes with this—I've said on here before, The World Ends With You is one of my favorite games of all time. Seeing a countdown timer for the series not only conclude in a new game announcement, but gameplay as well, makes me feel like I could Kool-Aid Man my way through a brick wall right now.

We're not far off from seeing more of this, either. The closing of the trailer says it's coming in 2021, for Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4. There are surely plenty of small details to pick out from the trailer, from other returning faces to more game mechanics and possible plot teases. Still, we are living in a year where a follow-up to The World Ends With You has been announced. Not a bad way to start the holiday week, right?
