NES Classic Beats Sales of PS4, Xbox One, and Switch in Return to Stores

NES Classic Beats Sales of PS4, Xbox One, and Switch in Return to Stores

Hardware sales overall on the rise thanks to Fortnite, E3.

After a bit of a hiatus, the NPD Group released the industry sales for June 2018. Considering E3 and the re-release of the NES Classic both happened in June, the sales numbers paints an interesting picture. For the first time since the NPD tracked sales an NES console topped hardware sale.

To be clear the re-release of NES Classic topped June’s hardware sales by unit, not the original NES which came out in North America in 1985. The PlayStation 4 topped hardware sales in terms of dollar sales but considering that you can buy five NES Classics for one new PlayStation 4, that makes sense.

Hardware sales overall saw a 52 percent growth compared to a year ago at $350 million. All current-generation consoles, the Xbox One, PS4, and Nintendo Switch, saw sales growth. NPD chalks this down to E3 promotions and of course the popularity of Fortnite which is driving hardware sales in its wake. Mario Tennis Aces

In terms of software Mario Tennis Aces was the bestselling game of June 2018 and the Nintendo Switch was the only hardware that saw a growth in software sales for the month. While software sales for June 2018 are down one percent compared to last year, overall software sales in 2018 have grown by six percent compared to a year ago by this time.
