The New Battletoads Bounces Back Into Action This August

The 'Toads are back in town.

The Battletoads revival has been missing for a while now, but today, Rare and Xbox announced a release date. The new entry in the Battletoads franchise will launch on Aug. 20, for Xbox One and PC.

Series creator Rare is assisting on the new entry, but this new Battletoads is helmed by Dlala Studios. It still looks like a Battletoads game though, with plenty of beat 'em up action and vehicle segments to frustrate the best of us.

The new Battletoads will have couch co-op for up to three players, and it'll be coming to Xbox Game Pass launch. I guess that makes it a pretty easy way to pitch your friends on joining up to punch, jump, and blast through the new levels.

Alongside the beat 'em up action and hopping vehicle segments, there are also top-down shooter and side-scrolling pseudo-platformer setpieces shown in the trailer. It seems like this new Battletoads will bounce around a few different ideas in its runtime. And of course, the game will feature the Battletoads' "irreverent" '90s cartoon humor

Though we've seen brief glimpses over the years, this new Battletoads has seemed like a big question mark for some time. It'll be interesting to see what Dlala Studios does with the franchise, especially one that's so notorious for its difficulty. There are plenty of brawlers making a comeback this year—maybe the toads can do it too?

Battletoads will hit Xbox One and PC, via Windows and Steam, and Xbox Game Pass on Aug. 20, 2020.
