It may be hell on Earth, but in a new trailer for Doom Eternal, it looks like the Doom Slayer is up for the task of restoring order. A new look at the sequel to the series' 2016 refresh doesn't just show us the new toys the Slayer has to play with, but a glimpse of what's underneath the helmet too.
While we've already seen some gameplay of Doom Eternal, today's trailer sheds light on the story stakes behind the demons and destruction. A new force looks to be taking part in the invasion of Earth, with one almost-seraphic being taking particular onus with the Doom Slayer's attempts to kick the underworld out.
As new forces surface to thwart the Doom Slayer's plan, including one angry-looking demon with an axe, the Doom Slayer gets a few toys of his own. You'd expect more guns, but the Slayer's also toting a sword this go-around, using it to dice up a pretty big monster at the end of the trailer. More importantly, we finally get a glimpse under the helmet: I spy hair, a nose, some eyes, and more. It seems like Doom Slayer is your average Joe, if you know a Joe that's capable of rocket-jumping and making frequent round-trips to hell.
There are a lot of new gameplay mechanics, like dashing, that have added a game-breaking twist to Doom 2016's formula. The reboot's successor was backed out of its original 2019 launch to add some extra time for development, with the Switch version delayed even further. But while Doom Eternal will now compete with Animal Crossing for your time on March 20, 2020, it's making a fairly compelling case so far.
