New Minecraft 2DS XL Creeper Edition Is Awesome, and so's the Animal Crossing One

Nintendo is releasing more special edition 2DS handhelds, once again convincing people they need to buy the system at least one more time.

Nintendo, the undisputed king of special edition consoles, is at it again. The firm has revealed a trio of new special edition 2DS systems, each offering a huge 3DS franchise as its theme.

The Minecraft 2DS XL looks amazing, unless you really focus on the face and get creeped out.

First up is the awesome looking Minecraft Edition 2DS XL, which features a green creeper on its lid. This is one of the most impressive special edition handhelds I've seen, and is sure to get fans doing mental gymnastics as they figure out if they can really justify yet another Nintendo handheld. This edition comes complete with Minecraft: New Nintendo 3DS Edition.

The Animal Crossing 2DS XL is lovely.

Also looking pretty great is the Animal Crossing 2DS XL, which features an intricate design and comes preloaded Animal Crossing: New Leaf—Welcome amiibo (the original New Leaf but with support for all Animal Crossing series amiibo figures and cards).

Boring!

Finally there is the Mario Kart 7 special Edition 2DS XL. This goes for a sleep black with red trim design, and includes a copy of Mario Kart 7 pre-loaded.

Animal Crossing Pocket Camp is doing its best to upsell users a new system.

We're waiting to hear from Nintendo America about US release dates for these special edition 2DS systems, but in Japan Animal Crossing and Mario Kart 7 systems are set for July 19, while Minecraft is arriving on August 2. Mobile game Animal Crossing Pocket Camp is currently promoting the Animal Crossing New 2DS XL via an in-game notice (confirmed by USG, but spotted by Eurogamer), giving the system a July 20 release date in the UK.

We'll update with US release information as soon as Nintendo America makes an announcement. For more on Minecraft, head over to our best Minecraft Mods Page.
