We've finally got a good look at the live-action portrayals in Netflix's upcoming Witcher series, and they're a little more reassuring than previous glimpses. Today, Netflix released promotional shots of three lead characters: Geralt of Rivia, Yennefer of Vengerberg, and Ciri.
Posted on the Netflix Twitter account this morning, a promotional poster was followed by three shots, one of each of the characters. While they're obviously hand-picked to showcase each one of them, they're not half bad.
Henry Cavill looks a little less Halloween costume-y, though it's going to be hard getting used to a younger, more clean-shaven Geralt. Similarly, Freya Allan plays a younger Ciri than Wild Hunt fans might expect. Since the series will adapt the novels by Andrzej Sapokowski, which take place earlier in the Witcher continuum than the games, all of these characters will be earlier along in their journeys than you might expect. I was most impressed by Anya Cholatra's Yennefer though. She certainly captures the look of the politically motivated sorceress, knife and all.
Though Geralt's dual swords are curiously missing, showrunner and producer Lauren S. Hissrich took to Twitter with a few more shots and an explanation as to Geralt's missing silver or steel.

While a few scripts have already leaked online, the series is set for sometime this year, likely fall. We'll have to see whether fantasy works out in live action form, and whether Cavill can get across that gravelly Geralt we've all come to love, but it's cool seeing this series get a shot at a premium adaptation. I'd love to see it go deep into the books, as at least a few fans of the games have probably never dived into the excellent novels.
