Your Nintendo Switch Time Played Counters Might Be Resetting Soon [Update #2]

For the launch titles, folks are seeing all their played time just disappear.

Update #2: Nintendo of America has offered around further update on this situation, confirming that the bug is only visual in nature. The play time is still being correctly recorded and a future Switch system update will fix the bug.

"Some Nintendo Switch owners’ play activity information is displaying incorrectly, but play activity is still being recorded accurately in the background. A future Nintendo Switch system update will resolve this issue and ensure play time data is correctly displayed. We apologize for the inconvenience," a Nintendo spokesperson told USgamer today.

Update: Nintendo of America is aware of the issue and is currently looking into fixes.

"Some Nintendo Switch owners' play activity information is displaying incorrectly. We are aware of the issue and we expect to have more information to share in the near future," a Nintendo spokesperson told USgamer.

If you happened to pick up a Nintendo Switch at launch on March 3, 2017 alongside at least one game, you'll probably start to see a weird bug in your Profile soon. Players have reported seeing a reset in their Played Time listed for the Switch launch titles. This is notable in the case of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, a game that some folks have poured many hundreds of hours into.

The reset was first noticed by ResetEra poster Executive Taxi, when their Breath of the Wild counter switched over to "First played 0 days ago". Other posters later confirmed the same thing happened to them, as did users on the Nintendo Switch subreddit.

I checked my personal Nintendo Switch to find that the bug continues on after the reset. My Played Time for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is currently listed as "First played 9 days ago". So what gives? One user over the Nintendo Switch subreddit has offered up some speculation.

"Looks like Nintendo's code is only looking for the day and month you last played the game and figuring out the time since then. It's ignoring the year. It doesn't know you started March 3rd 2017, just March 3rd, so 0 days ago," said Reddit user VOOK64.

This would track because I started playing The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild before most of you, since I was playing the game for review. I don't have the actual date I received our review copy from Nintendo, but 9 days feels about right. If that's the case, the Played Time counters will remain incorrect if you haven't played the game since the reset. Theoretically, this means your correct played time might return within 11 days: Switch games show played time in 10 days after you first launch a game.

It's a very weird bug for the first anniversary of the Nintendo Switch. We've reached out to Nintendo for comment on the situation.
