Nioh 2 Charges Headfirst Into a Packed Spring 2020

Nioh 2 Charges Headfirst Into a Packed Spring 2020

Nioh 2 joins a long list of spring blockbusters.

The sequel to Nioh, Team Ninja's surprise Souls-like hit from 2017, has set a date for its return. Nioh 2 will launch for the PlayStation 4 on March 13, 2020, in what's becoming a very stacked last spring before the next generation of consoles.

Nioh 2 looks to keep the original game's Soulsborne spirit alive, as it's bringing back a lot of the hacking and slash you'd expect. It worked very well the first time around, and Nioh 2 seems like it's adding some twists to the formula with Yokai spirits who aid you in battle. Finally, a gritty reboot of Yo-Kai Watch.

But this places Nioh at the start of an incredibly packed spring. March alone will have Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and the recently delayed Doom Eternal. In April and May, there are even more blockbusters like Cyberpunk 2077, Trials of Mana, Marvel's Avengers, and The Last of Us Part 2. Luckily for Nioh 2, other games like Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2 have already vacated the space.

It's likely one last burst of major games before a holiday season focused on the PlayStation 5 and the next Xbox, codenamed Project Scarlett. Hopefully Nioh's Souls appeal and the prestige of its debut can make it stand out above the pack.

If you're curious to see whether Nioh 2 will turn out alright, there's an open beta starting this Friday, Nov. 1 and running through Nov. 11. We'll likely get some indication of what kind of changes Nioh 2 is making then, and whether its sophomore outing will be just as strong as the first.
