No Disney Infinity 4.0 For 2016, Which Should Be the Status Quo

No Disney Infinity 4.0 For 2016, Which Should Be the Status Quo

Disney Interactive decides not to fracture its user base anymore… for now.

Disney Infinity will not have a new 4.0 version for 2016, according to an announcement by Disney Infinity general manager John Blackburn. Instead, Disney Infinity 3.0 will be rolling forward and Disney will continue to support the game with new figures in its Disney, Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars lines.

"We value our fans and your feedback, and we've heard your requests to extend the life of our Starter Packs loud and clear," wrote Blackburn. "So, in 2016, we are focusing our development efforts on adding more Play Sets and characters – based on the biggest events coming from Disney this year – to the 3.0 Edition. In other words, if it's happening at The Walt Disney Company, it's happening inside Disney Infinity. Specifically, we plan to release four new Play Sets that are compatible with Disney Infinity 3.0 in 2016."

Previously, every year would offer up a new version of Disney Infinity and assorted sets of new characters and play sets for the game. The issue was that characters and play sets for the newest version of the game would not work with an older version. All the characters and content moved forward, not backward. This was confusing for parents most of all, who may have picked up Star Wars figures this holiday season, only to realize those figures didn't work with Disney Infinity or Disney Infinity 2.0. Every year, parents had to buy a new Starter Pack (standalone Disney Infinity is sometimes hard to find at retail) if they wanted to keep up.

That's blissfully gone. Like Lego Dimensions, parents only have to focus on buying new figures and play sets this year. It also means, lead developer Avalanche software can concentrate on improving existing content rather than adding new features.

Blackburn outlined the new figures and sets coming this year. First up is Zootopia, which brings stars Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde into Disney Infinity. To tie in with The Jungle Book live-action film, Baloo from the original Jungle Book animated film will get a figure. And for the upcoming Captain America: Civil War, there's the new Marvel Battlegrounds Play Set, featuring four-player local co-op and new figures for Captain America, Black Panther, Ant-Man, Vision, and Black suit Spider-Man.

If were a betting man, I'd say you can expect Finding Dory, Moana, and Doctor Strange figures in the mid to latter part of 2016. I'm unsure if Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will get any figures, given its focus.

Third-person action-adventure games are his personal poison: Uncharted, Infamous, and Assassin's Creed just to name a few. If you see him around a convention, he's not hard to spot: Black guy, glasses, and a tie.
