Now the Internet Hivemind is Playing Hearthstone

If Twitch Plays Pokémon wasn't quite frustrating enough for you, now there's a new contender.

Twitch Plays Pokémon was an interesting experiment -- and a surprisingly successful one -- but by gosh, could it be infuriating to watch at times.

I haven't quite made up my mind whether or not watching a hivemind of people on the Internet attempting to play Hearthstone is more or less frustrating than watching Pokémon's menus being repeatedly opened and closed for hours at a time, but it's certainly an interesting way to while away a few minutes if you have nothing better to do.

Hearthmind is a new Twitch Plays Pokémon-style experience whereby viewers can observe and influence a stream of Blizzard's popular virtual card game Hearthstone. Rather than adopting Twitch Plays Pokémon's complicated Anarchy/Democracy system, Hearthmind instead allows players to record mouse movements on the stream, and every five seconds -- recorded by an on-screen timer -- one of the recorded gestures is picked to be sent to the game. And thus the game continues.

So far Hearthmind has actually been doing surprisingly well, having successfully advanced to Rank 20 in Hearthstone -- you start at 25. A decent number of moves being played appear to be by players who actually want to see the Hearthmind account do well, though of course there's the odd troll move in there, particularly when using the "bonus mana" Coin card is concerned. For the most part, though, the fact that there's less than a hundred participants at the time of writing compared to the thousands who were watching and "contributing" to Twitch Plays Pokémon means that Hearthmind is, overall, a somewhat less chaotic experience.

If you're a Hearthstone player, keep an eye out for the Hearthmind account; you might just find yourself playing against the hivemind!
