NPD: Animal Crossing: New Horizons Is One of Nintendo's Fastest Selling Games Ever

Everyone's playing Animal Crossing.

Nintendo has another hit on its hands. Now that the dust is finally clearing from March 2020, NPD is reporting that not only were video game sales up, but Animal Crossing: New Horizons was one of the games leading the pack.

It shouldn't surprise many to know that Animal Crossing: New Horizons sold well. It hit at a perfect time, as many regions around the world were enacting stay-at-home directives. New Horizons was the best-selling game of March 2020, but even in the context of Nintendo games, it sold massively well.

According to the NPD Group, Animal Crossing: New Horizons' debut puts it at the number two spot of the year, and the third-highest launch month physical dollar and unit sales of any Nintendo game in tracked history. The only games to beat it in launch month performance, via NPD's numbers, are Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Brawl. New Horizons' launch month also clears the lifetime sales of all other Animal Crossing games, easily making it the best-selling game in the franchise.

Meanwhile, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare saw a second wind in March, leaving it second in the month and first overall in 2020 sales. The bump in popularity from Warzone and the trial weekend probably helped get a new wave of players in, if I had to guess. MLB The Show 20 also performed well, setting a new franchise record for launch month sales.

It was overall a massive month for video game spending, with an NPD-tracked total of $1.6 billion spent—the highest for March since 2008. We already knew video game playing was up in general, and surging sales of the Nintendo Switch have even caused shortages of the popular console. Despite that, Animal Crossing: New Horizons is setting a high bar for Nintendo, and already looks like one of the system's biggest games.

Here are the rest of the top sellers for March 2020, per NPD:
