Octopath Traveler Prequel Announced for Mobile

There will be full endings for all 8 characters.

Well, who saw this one coming? There's a new Octopath Traveler game in development, but it's not for Nintendo Switch. Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent is a mobile game that’s coming to iOS and Android devices, and it takes place before the main events of Octopath Traveler.

Announced by Square Enix today on March 8, the mobile game is due out at some point in 2019 in Japan. Although Square will begin taking registrations for a demo for Champions of the Continent later this month on March 12, there’s currently no word on whether the game is coming west.

As for the game itself, Champions of the Continent is a free-to-play, single-player RPG. It’s set several years before the main events of Octopath Traveler, and from what we can see in the trailer above, it doesn’t look like any of the characters from the previous game will be making a return in this prequel.

However, there will be full plot lines, and endings in store for each of the 8 characters. You’ll choose between three reigning champion characters to play as, and you’ll see a unique story from their perspective. Champions of the Continent will employ touch-based controls with swiping for combat, and you can form a party of up to eights characters at once, more than the maximum of four in Octopath Traveler.
