Oculus Rift Games Come to HTC Vive With Plug-In

The two competing VR platforms just got closer with a new homebrew patch.

Though Oculus Rift and HTC Vive are separate platforms with separate software libraries, it seems one intrepid enthusiast has created a patch that brings Oculus games over to the latter platform. The Revive plug-in from LibreVR, brings titles created in the Oculus SDK over to OpenVR. ArsTechnica tried it out with Lucky's Tale, the exclusive pack-in game that comes with every Oculus Rift, and can confirm the plug-in works.

A hack means Lucky's Tale now works on HTC Vive.

Oculus VR has called the plug-in a "hack" and does not support it. Making the plug-in work requires bypassing Oculus' code-signing check, which is probably against the company's end-user license agreement.

"This is a hack, and we don't condone it," Oculus VR told ArsTechnica. "Users should expect that hacked games won't work indefinitely, as regular software updates to games, apps, and our platform are likely to break hacked software."

VR fans don't really want a platform war, but currently, but developers have to tailor their games for either the Rift or Vive. According to Oculus VR founder Palmer Luckey that decision is ultimately up to manufacturers.

"We can only extend our SDK to work with other headsets if the manufacturer allows us to do so. It does not take very much imagination to come up with reasons why they might not be able or interested," said Luckey in a Reddit thread.

Valve denies putting up any barriers for Oculus though. The HTC Vive uses software developed on Valve's OpenVR software development kit. While many SteamVR games work through the current Steam store, Valve and HTC are open to any VR title working with the Vive.

"We think exclusivity is a bad idea for customers, for developers, and for the long term," Valve boss Gabe Newell told DigitalTrends. "Developers can ship their VR apps on Steam regardless of whether or not they support Vive. We think customers should buy their VR apps on whatever store they prefer."

"Anything Oculus or other stores need to work with the Vive are documented in the freely available OpenVR APIs," added Valve's Doug Lombardi.

These are early issues and discussions that will only gain steam as consumers get their hands of the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. Currently, both headsets are experiencing heavy shipping delays and other issues.
