Oddworld: Soulstorm Is Heading to PS5 and Looking Pretty Intense [Update]

Lorne Lanning and his crew have clearly been hard at work.

Update [6:15 p.m. ET]: The standalone version of today's new trailer confirms that Oddworld Soulstorm will be a Sony exclusive, at least for a little while.

Oddworld Soulstorm will come to both the PS5 and PS4, where it will be "console exclusive for a limited time." It's also confirmed for PC.

We've updated the original article below to reflect this.

If you came into today's PS5 game reveal stream hoping for a serious slap of nostalgia, you're in luck. Oddworld: Soulstorm got a brand new trailer today that's both visually impressive and, for the Oddworld lore nuts out there, wildly intense.

We've seen Oddworld: Soulstorm on and off for a few years now, but today's showing on the PS5 stream is our best look at the title yet. The Oddworld games have always balanced humor with the dark and bizarre, but seeing the Mudokons in peril with such high fidelity (and, story-wise, such high stakes) is a lot to take in.

In a striking moment right at the trailer's end, we see Abe getting ready to cut the straps on his mouth that have been there since the very first Oddworld game on the original PlayStation and PC. Could Soulstorm be gearing up to bring an end to Abe's journey? Maybe, maybe not, but either way it looks like it'll be a substantial entry in the series.

Series creator Lorne Lanning made a brief apperance at the start of the stream to talk about the game. Soulstorm is slated for a 2020 release, but considering that we haven't heard much about it in the last few months, that may change.
