One of the Epic Games Store's big laucnh exclusives is branching out to other platforms. Hades, Supergiant Games' hellish roguelike, will arrive on Steam Early Access on December 10.
Supergiant Games-the studio behind Bastion, Transistor, and Pyre-took a leap, both in going to the Epic Games Store and in going into Early Access. The developer says in a Steam statement that Hades is aiming for a v1.0 launch in the second half of 2020, but it will enter Steam's storefront as an Early Access title.
Hades was a big get for the, at the time, nascent Epic Games Store. When we talked with Supergiant 's Greg Kasavin at DICE in February, he told us a little more about why the studio went to Epic. Besides wanting to just start development of Hades on one platform rather than several, the smaller, curated storefront of Epic was appealing.
"There are many early access games on Steam, and we had to weigh being quote unquote 'another early access game on Steam' and managing the expectations of our players who may be accustomed to complete games from us," Kasavin told USgamer. "I think there's some stigma that can come with early access games, so there was appeal in conducting early access somewhere else inherently and we just became excited by Epic's vision for their store."
Now Hades is branching out to other PC storefronts, though no other platforms like PlayStation 4 have been confirmed yet.
Though there are a few valid critiques of the Epic Games Store, response to it has been more largely rooted in wild accusations and a fervent anti-Epic sentiment that has led to floods of harassment falling on devs who opt to stock Epic's digital shelves. Fingers are crossed that Supergiant's transition to being on both storefronts remains civil.
