Nintendo released a list of the top downloaded games in Japan on the Nintendo Switch in 2018, and sitting comfortably in third place is Overcooked 2. Downloads for Ghost Town Games' kitchen sim even beat out games like Splatoon 2 and Pokemon Let's Go Pikachu and Eevee.
Unsurprisingly, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe took the top two spots respectively on Nintendo's most downloaded game on Switch list. But Overcooked 2's third-place finish is genuinely surprising, not because Overcooked 2 is a bad game (far from it), but because of the games it beat to earn its spot. Not only did Overcooked 2 pull in front of a new Pokemon game, but also games like Super Mario Party, Octopath Traveler, and Mario Tennis Aces.
Overcooked 2 is also only the second game on that list not made by a Japanese developer. The other top-10 finisher is Mojang's Minecraft, which came in at number nine.
Overcooked 2 is a sequel to the 2016 kitchen sim where up to four players can work co-operatively in a kitchen to create meals to serve to customers. The game requires players to divvy up tasks like ingredient prep, cooking, cleaning, and serving in a race against time to get the most meals out to customers. Overcooked 2 won Best Family Game at last year's The Game Awards.
Our Overcooked 2 review was also positive calling it, "the sort of game that inspires everyone to channel their inner Gordon Ramsay[.]" We're glad to see that Overcooked 2 found similar success abroad, especially up against such competition.
