Around this time last year, Overwatch unveiled the Uprising event; an event rooted in lore, in the promise of expanding the game's story for the first time in-game beyond its ancillary comics and animations. It featured a shiny new PvE mode too. Now, the second iteration of Uprising is live across all platforms of Overwatch, and it has a new special PvE event (and new collectible goodies) in tow.
Overwatch Archives is the name of this year's refreshed limited time event, a seasonal occurence from Blizzard that is bringing back last year's Uprising mission and introducing something new alongside it: Retribution. The special lore-focused event features over 160 skins, sprays, and other cosmetics—including an especially "dope" Hanzo skin, according to director Jeff Kaplan. The event most notably is hosting a special limited time PvE mode that's a lot different from last year's Uprising. The Retribution mode spotlights a particular Blackwatch mission gone awry after a teammate goes rogue and gets them all in trouble, as seen from the perspective of Reaper (here still known as Gabriel Reyes), Moira, McCree, and Genji.
"The amount of postmortem-ing we did on Uprising was pretty amazing," Kaplan tells us from Blizzard's campus during an Overwatch event last week. "We're very curious about PvE and want to learn how to do it better."
The primary PvE mode featuring Reaper, Moira, McCree, and Genji is the event's Story Mode. If players don't want to be stuck with three DPS-focused heroes and one support, then All Heroes Mode is also available from the Arcade. Retribution also introduces the game's newest PvP map: Rialto. The map will be an Escort map after the Retribution mission this month concludes, where players will be able to team up to escort the good ol' payload across the Venice, Italy-based map.
